Diary Entry #1

First day of Akhet

Today is the day where the first day of the inundation starts. ‘I better pray to at least a deity with a jackal head’ I thought as I woke up in my stone house and wore my white robe made out of linen. Only wealthy people like me could afford stone houses. My breakfast was a loaf of bread, coconuts, and a beer to start the day. Since my house is beside the river, I asked Neshi, the fisherman to deliver me some fish for dinner. I hoped that the fisherman could get some fish even though it was the flooding season... I wore my leather sandals and walked all the way to the palace where Meryl-Neith, the pharaoh lives. My job is an architect so I had to ask the pharaoh what to design......... I greeted the pharaoh and she asked me to design a pyramid for her death. “We need lots of men to carry the heavy stones though....” I said. “Don’t worry Iteti! I got it under-control!” the pharaoh shouted. After that, I went back to my house and designed the pyramid. I got a piece of papyrus and started to work. As usual, a pyramid is a 3-D shaped triangle. 2 hours later, I managed to put the finishing touches on my design.

A peasant wanted me to make a flat roof so I dumped some mud in my bucket from the Nile River and went to his place. Nebnefer, the peasant was glad that I came early. I asked him for a ladder and I climbed. I just had to put some mud and I could eat my lunch. After that, it was a success. Unfortunately, the peasant didn’t have the price to pay so he gave me some food for return. I gobbled up the finger-licking lamb, beer, and some vegetables. The peasant thanked me for making a flat roof as I rushed to the pharaohs palace. “How impressing Iteti! You are the best architect in the world!” Meryl-Neith was thrilled with my work. “Is it possible for me to have my own statue of myself in front of the pyramid?” I questioned. “Of course! You worked so hard for me for 10 years!” Meryl-Neith said. We discussed about where we were going to place the pyramid, etc. Millions of people came around the pharaohs temple as I commanded people to carry huge stones across the area. I also had to design the tomb for the pharaoh, the statues, and the boat for her body to be carried up the Nile River. ‘It’s gonna take years to make this pyramid!’ I thought as I went to find Florika, the boat-builder. I later asked Kawit, the scribe to make a poster around in the village saying that the pharaoh wanted people to help make a pyramid. A few minutes later, when I went to the village, lots of people were starring at the poster and were whispering something. I hoped that the people could arrive beside the temple right now...

In a blink of an eye, I saw a shop beside the Nile River called “Florika’s Boat Shop”. I entered an my eyes were starring at glamorous young women was wearing her long dress. “Excuse me, are you the owner of the shop?” I stammered. “That’s me!” She yelled. “I would like to order a boat for the Meryl-Neith please.” I said. “Of course, but where do you want me to put the boat?” She questioned. “Beside the pharaohs temple. You will see millions of people carrying stones.” I answered. “It will take around 1 hour to make you the most awesome boat you will ever see!” She spoke. I exited out of the shop and had to look for Tackla, the carpenter. I had lots of work to do for the pharaoh.

Surprisingly Tackla’s old brick house was right beside Florika’s shop. I knocked the door and appeared Tackla. She was wearing a green dress. “What do you want from me?” She asked. “I just want to do me a favor.” I said. She invited me in her brick house. Tackla gave me a cup of tea as I sat down on a stool. “Could you make a statue of me and the pharaoh?” I asked. “Depends. What will you give me in return?” She ordered. “ I will give you some gold and some wood!” I responded. “OK. I just need a picture of you and the pharaoh. “ She said. We had a long conversation as I handed over a drawn picture of me and the pharaoh. I also gave her some help by Debi, the stone carver.

Next, I had to make a tomb of the pharaoh. It took hours and hours for me to design the tomb. I had to make the tomb for the pharaoh for her afterlife. Finally, I came up with a fascinating design and I started to make it. I got some mud, bricks, and limb stone. The tomb looked like if the pharaoh could fit inside it though but there weren’t colors to make it look amusing. I hired Key, the painter to paint the tomb by the following colors I chose. I could see the sun in the horizon as it was time for dinner. I ate a loaf of bread, beer, olives, etc. After eating, I went to see how the progress was doing. First, I went to see how the pyramid was doing. People were sweating, exhausted as I told them they could go home and rest. The pyramid looked like it was around 1/365.5 completed. I also saw the boat that Florika made. It was very huge and was shiny. Meryl-Neith came and was very impressed with me . “You made me a tomb, boat, pyramid, etc!” She screamed . Later, I went back home and ate my dinner. It was same as usual. Bread, beer, fish, and olives. After my dinner, I went back to schedule as I went to see how the statue was doing. Tackla and Debi were making the statue. Although it looked like a half human, it was good for the first day. Finally, I walked to the work space near my house where Key was painting the tomb. Key was working very hard as he was taking a break. Gold, silver, blue, and other colors were on the tomb. Today was a busy day as I felt extremely proud and happy for myself as I headed home to sleep.
