2nd Day of Akhet
“OMG!” I just had a nightmare. Sweat was dripping from my forehead as I got ready for breakfast. There was an evil spirit haunting me in my room. I screamed like a girl and ran out of my house. People were running around like mad as I was feared. I didn’t have my appetite today so I just had some bread, and beer. Today I wore my eye of Horus amulet that I received from Ani, the jeweller. The amulet protects me from bad spirits so I decided to wear it. As usual, I wore my white robe and leather shoes. I had to go to the temple to pray to Shai, the god of fate. ‘There are so many gods in Ancient Egypt!’ I thought. As I walked to Meryl-Neith’s temple, a scribe was writing hieroglyphics on a papyrus paper. “What’s your name?” I asked. “Kawit the scribe sir!” She yelled. “Can you draw me Ankh, the symbol of life and the sphinx?” I questioned. “That will be 1 gold coin sir!” She yelled with confidence. I handed her the gold coin as she began drawing the symbol of life and the sphinx. The reason why I also chose the sphinx was that it was the sign of protection and wisdom. It took her around a few minutes as the drawing was amazing. I thanked her as I headed to the temple.
It took like a 2 mile walk to the temple. Sweat was dripping from my nose as I hurried to the temple. Finally, when I arrived to the temple. I could see hieroglyphics everywhere as I greeted Meryl-Neith and went to pray to Shai, the god of fate, so that all the people in Egypt could live a good life. Later, I met Tia, the priestess in the temple. “Long time no see Iteti!” She greeted me with a warm welcome. “You too Tia. I came here to pray to Shai, the god of fate.” “Do you want to pray with me?” I said. “Sure. I just need to get some offerings to the god. “ She responded as she disappeared. A few minutes later, she came back with a basket. ‘Something tasty had got to be in that bag!’ I thought as she laid the food, drinks, and the decoration on the floor. Later, other priests, and priestesses joined as they poured drops of water in a spoon-like saucer. After that, each person carried a small pot so that the incense could be burned. Tia explained me more about how job and other information. She told me that being a priest/priestess was quite simple. She told me that priests give advice to other people, teach other people, etc. When I heard that, I asked her for some advice about being busy all the time. Tia said that I should have breaks, etc. Tia talked more about religion and other stuff so it started to get really boring. All about the gods were stuck in my head! Gods took part in the creation of the world. Ancient Egyptians believed that it was important to recognise the gods so that life could continue smoothly.Unfortunately, I just told her that the information was just to hard to remember so I thanked her as I went back to my house.
At my house, I ate my lunch. It was usual. Some vegetables, beer, a loaf of bread, etc. I sat down with my lunch and then heard someone crying. I dashed out of my house with my lunch and was curious about why the person was crying. I saw a huge crowd sobbing with tears as Tackla was making a coffin. ‘A rich wealthy man/lady must have died’ I thought. “Hey Tackla. How are you doing? “ I asked her. “Fine Iteti. Unfortunately someone had just died so I have to make a coffin.” She responded back to me. Lots of familiar people were here such as Tackla, Tia, Isis, etc. I greeted my fellow friends as I continued to eat my lunch. Tia was wearing the mask of Anubis as Tackla finished making the coffin. The dead corpse was dried out with natron. Isis was making Canopic jars for the organs to be protected. It was time. Tia carried the coffin to the desert as there was a huge hole dug up. She gently placed the coffin inside with other stuff for the afterlife. After that, the people started to cover up the coffin with sand as people went back to their business. ‘I almost forgot to pay the taxes!’ I thought as I rushed to the vizier. Nebetah, the vizier was walking back to the palace as I screamed “Wait!” as I took a break. “Iteti, the architect! You forgot to pay your taxes!” She said. “Not this time! I got 100 gold coins!” I answered back as I reached into my pockets. “The pharaoh told me to give you a 50 percent discount,” She said so I just handed over the amount of coins I had to pay. “You got lucky this time Iteti.” Nebetah spoke as she walked away.
The sun was on the horizon as it was starting to get dark. I went back to my house and ate my dinner. I didn’t have an appetite so I just ate figs, dates, peas, garlic, onions, and drank some beer. Today was another busy day as I still remembered my nightmare. I hope that I didn’t have to get a nightmare tonight since there was the drawing of a sphinx. ‘I hope that someday I could get a vacation and just relax. But since things have been busy, I just have to wait until that day comes.’ I thought as I dozed off. I couldn’t actually sleep because I kept on thinking about the events that happened today. When I started thinking about the death ritual, I started to get goosebumps. I curled up in my bed and told myself to sleep. It was difficult to sleep like a time like this so I just ate more dates and onions until I get tired. I started to yawn so then I managed to sleep. Today was another busy day for me.
